We did it, East Valley. Another Arizona summer is behind us, and for the first time in months the forecast is showing highs under 100°. For anyone who loves the outdoors here, that means one thing: hiking season is back.

From May through September, most of our local trails are off-limits for anyone who values their safety. Now they're open again, and the timing couldn't be better. This summer's monsoon storms left the desert with a green flush you only get for a short window. The saguaros look full, the palo verdes are bright, and the whole landscape feels alive.

Here are four of our favorite spots to get back out there:

1. Usery Mountain Regional Park

A local classic on the northeast edge of Mesa. You'll find trails for every level, from easy loops to the climb up to the Wind Cave. It's a great pick for families or anyone easing back into the season.

2. San Tan Mountain Regional Park

In the southern East Valley near Queen Creek and San Tan Valley, this park has thousands of acres of quiet Sonoran Desert. The trails are well-marked and less crowded, so it's ideal for a peaceful morning walk.

3. The Superstition Mountains

Nothing says East Valley like the Superstitions. Whether you take a short walk at Lost Dutchman State Park or go deeper into the wilderness, the views of those rugged peaks never get old.

4. Siphon Draw Trail

Want a real workout? Siphon Draw is it. This steep, rocky climb toward the Flatiron is one of the most demanding hikes in the area, and the payoff views are worth every step. Go early and know your limits.

Before you head out

Start early. Fall mornings are beautiful, but afternoons can still get hot.

Bring more water than you think you'll need. Plan on at least a liter per hour.

Bring your people. Hiking is better with friends, family, or the dog (check pet rules first).

Check trail conditions. Monsoon season can leave washouts or loose rock.

Show us where you're headed

We love seeing our community out on the trails. Tag us in your hiking pics this season. We want to see your favorite spots, your sunrise views, and your crew. See you out there!
